Free Rice Project



Subject:  CTE
Grades:  6, 7, 8

Objectives:
Keyboarding
– Apply the touch method in operating the keyboard and numeric keypad. 
- Apply formatting features in document processing.

Business Computer Technology
-Analyze technology issues
-Reinforce keyboarding technique and document processing skills. 
– Utilize word processing and desktop publishing software.
- Utilize spreadsheet software.
– Utilize multimedia/presentation graphics software.
 
Project Scope:
1.  Utilize the http://freerice.com site to learn vocabulary words and help fight world hunger.
2.  Use ThinkQuest.org (interactive social media site) to post 10 things learned from Freerice.com.
3.  Use word processing software and correct letter formatting to write a persuasive letter requesting 1 box of rice to donate to a local charity.  Students will also learn how to print, sign, and fold a letter as well as how to address an envelop.
4.  Use word processing software and correct memo formatting to write a memorandum to a teacher in the HPS system telling him/her about the Freerice.com site.
5.  Use telecommunications software (Outlook) to email the memo as an attachment to a HPS teacher.
6.  BCT Students - Utilize spreadsheet software to create formulas to provide percentages and average rice donated.  Create a chart to represent the rice donated by the student compared to the rice donated by the school.
7.  Utilize mulit-media software (PowerPoint) to create a non-linear presentation explaining what they did in the project.


Assessment:  Rubrics for each of the components of the project.

The activity was successful.  In the future, I will set firmer deadlines for work completion.
