Ratios and Proportions

Subjects:  Math, Science
Grade:  7
Technology tools:  Mimio Teach, PowerPoint presentation
Activity type:  Lesson

The lesson was a review of ratios and introduction of proportions.

I created a very simple PowerPoint presentation with questions on each slide with a few examples sprinkled in.  I also had proportion problems at the end.  As we began the lesson I had the students give me a definition of a ratio and then had one of the students use Mimio Teach to write the definition on the PowerPoint.  We continued our discussion into proportions and did the same thing.  I had examples and I had the students come up with other examples to put on the PowerPoint presentation until we had a good list of all the types of problems you can use proportions to solve.  The students also discussed and worked the example proportion problems on the Power Point.

I assessed student learning through discussion and by asking them questions.  All students were involved in some part of the PowerPoint presentation, either writing definitions, coming up with examples or solving problems.

The activity worked great!  All students were engaged and participating.  I might have some process (popsicle sticks, etc.) to make sure everyone gets gets their turn in a timely manner.
