Learning About the World

Subject:  Social Studies
Grade:  7
Technology tools:  Computer(s), LCD Projector
Tools used:  Video, Audio, Word processing
Activity type:  Unit, Teacher presentation, Research

Whenever we start a unit on a particular part of the world, the use of PowerPoints and video clips seem to really grab students' attention.  I am able to show students both past and present pictures and scenes related to the area we are studying.  Doing so enables students to get a better grasp of the reality of it all instead of just talking about a far-off place they may never visit or have little connection with now or in the future.

This sort of "get to know" activity is done for most all parts of the globe we study.

This type of activity has always been successful for me.  The students enjoy it and are initially engaged.  Later, students can recall images and discussions related to what they've seen.  During assessments, I make sure to use reference information students have both seen and discuss...leading to what I feel are better understanding and test scores.
