Exploring Possible Solutions for Civic Issues

Competency Goad 4: The learner will explore active roles as a citizen at the local level of government.


Students will log in to edmodo.com to access instructions for semester project.  They will collaborate to choose a local issue such as homelessness, poverty, juvenile crime, drop-out rate, etc. to research and find a possible solution.  Students will interview a local person or organization that addresses the issue.  They will create a video or Power Point presentation to present to class; a 3-page term paper will accomany the presentation.  Students will turn in all elements of the project through edmodo.com. This project covers a time span of 9-weeks. Most work is completed at school.

A rubric is provided for students; presentation is part of the grade.

This activity was successful in that students enjoyed researching, learning and speaking about various negative issues of our community.
