Using StoryBird with Cause and Effect

Subject:  Language Arts
Grade:  4
Technology tools:  Computer(s), Laptop(s)
Tools used:  Interactive website, Word processing
Activity type:  Lesson

This activity addressed language arts standards in both reading comprehension skills (cause/effect relationships) as well as creative writing.

Students were given the assignment to create a book on http://storybird.com/.  This is a fantastic FREE website that gives students a plethora of pictures to choose from as they become authors of their own story.  You could be concerned that this can only be used in the primary grades; however, I asked students to strategically include at least 3 cause and effect situations in their story (because this was our reading skill for the week).  This could be done with any skill and is great for differentiation at all learning levels.

Students will be assessed on the inclusion of at least 3 cause/effect relationships as well as their ability to compose a quality piece of writing.

The activity was very successful and kept even the most challenging of students engaged.  I allowed them to work either alone or with a partner and this really allowed for students to create wonderful pieces.
