Science Songs

Activity type:  Lesson, Teacher presentation

Content:  Interactions between living things and their environments; Vocabulary

A 6th grade science teacher, Mr. Parr, has created a lot of amazing songs that relate to various science topics. I discovered hiswork on YouTube. He writes new lyrics to popular rock, rap, and R & B songs kids are familiar with. The songs teach concepts such as symbiosis, the food chain/web (producers, consumers, etc.) as well as weather and force and motion.

He has a song for just about every science topic in the 5th grade curriculum! The students LOVE the songs and beg to listen to them daily. The songs have lyrics on the screen as well as diagrams to help the children visualize the concept in the song. The students enjoy singing along!

The songs were used throughout the unit. I also played a lot of them during our test review. Students were tested on the material at the end of the unit. The test scores were better than in past years.

The activity was very successful. I plan to continue to use songs to help students understand and remember science concepts!
